★★★★ 5 Star Rating · Resort · Typically USD 120–300 / night
Maua Nusa Penida, written as Māua by the resort, is a 5-star hilltop eco resort above Gamat Bay on the northwest coast of Nusa Penida, where villas with private pools look out over the ocean and the island’s green hills. It suits couples, honeymooners, and travelers who want a quiet base on the island instead of a day trip from Bali.
The resort sits near Toya Pakeh on Jalan Gamat Bay. It offers an outdoor pool, a spa, a gym, a library, KOWHAI Restaurant, and Aroha Bar, and it is known as the first luxury resort on the island.
Maua Nusa Penida is built around private pool villas set into terraces of original limestone and landscaped gardens. The one-bedroom villas each have a private pool, a garden, and a dressing area, and some add a separate living room. The three two-bedroom villas have an open living room and room for families or friends, with a jacuzzi in some versions. The Two Bedroom Duplex Pool Villa spreads over two levels with a valley view. Views change by villa, from open views and gardens to the sea and the valley, so pick the one that matters to you when you book.
Guests at Maua Nusa Penida can swim in the main pool, which looks toward the mountains, and children have a smaller pool nearby. The spa is open daily for massages and treatments, the gym is fully equipped, and the library is a quiet corner for reading. Free Wi-Fi and free secure parking are included, and the front desk is open 24 hours. The resort also runs snorkeling trips to spots such as Crystal Bay, Manta Point, Coral Gardens, and Gamat Bay, and can arrange a private charter boat. A small organic garden and the resort’s own beehives supply the kitchen.
KOWHAI Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a hyper-local menu that draws on more than 15 micro farms around the island. Aroha Bar, beside the pool, is the place for sunset cocktails and light bites, with a wine list that includes New Zealand labels. Villa guests also receive afternoon light bites. Between meals you can book a spa treatment, snorkel in Gamat Bay, or take a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon on neighboring Nusa Ceningan.
Maua Nusa Penida sits on Jalan Gamat Bay in Sakti, on the northwest side of Nusa Penida. Banana Beach is about 1.9 km away, and Gamat Bay and Crystal Bay are both within about 5 km. The Yellow Bridge is roughly 11 km away, and famous viewpoints such as Kelingking Beach and Angel’s Billabong are best seen as day trips from the resort. To arrive, take a fast boat from Sanur Harbour, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes, then a short car ride to the resort. Maua Nusa Penida works best for couples and honeymooners who want privacy, a pool of their own, and an early start at the island’s famous viewpoints before day-trip crowds arrive. Guest scores are high on major booking sites, with Expedia showing around 9.2 out of 10. One honest note: the island is only reached by boat or helicopter, sea conditions can change plans, the roads are steep, and rates sit at the higher end for Nusa Penida.
Check-in at Maua Nusa Penida is from 2:00 PM and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Late check-in is subject to availability. Compare current rates and villa types on Booking.com, Agoda and Expedia [BEST DEAL], then pick the one that fits your stay. Planning a wider trip? Browse more resorts in Bali.

Stayed at MAUA Nusa Penida for two nights and overall had a good experience. The location is definitely the standout feature of this resort. It’s set high up in the hills with incredible panoramic views overlooking the greenery, mountains, and Gamat Bay area. From our room we could see the sunrise, and from the lobby, which was only about a three-minute walk away, you could watch the sunset as well. Being able to experience both sunrise and sunset from the same resort was really special.
Exceeded expectations! Totally worth it. We came for our honeymoon and stayed on the island for a day — the service was excellent. They helped carry our suitcases to the room, the pool water is refreshed every morning, and the views are stunning! You can relax right in the villa. The breakfast at the restaurant was also especially delicious. Five stars without a doubt! Amazing 👏👏
One of the best hotels I’ve stayed in – from staff, service, hospitality, location, amenities. We booked a sea view with private pool and it was just phenomenal. Rizal and Linda from the front desk were absolutely brilliant, most helpful, and very accommodating. We also went to the spa and got the signature massage, and it was honestly the best massage across Bali – great technique, very skilled ladies Satya and Rina. Thank you so much to everyone!
